Don’t Buy Your Child a Costly Smartphone—Get Them a Mid-Range Laptop or Computer Instead

One of today’s biggest societal challenges is the widespread use of mobile phones. Without a doubt, smartphones are handy tools. They help us accomplish various essential tasks with ease. However, in Bangladesh, smartphones are often misused more than they are used constructively, especially by teenagers and even young children, who are becoming addicted to them.

Children in Bangladesh frequently pressure their parents to buy them expensive smartphones. Out of affection and an inability to say no, many parents give in. However, these smartphones often become a source of destruction for their kids. Teens spend hours glued to their screens, and there have even been cases where children, after being denied access to phones, have threatened or attempted self-harm. Social media addiction, inappropriate relationships, and exposure to adult content are becoming increasingly common among youth, leading to widespread social issues.

So, to all parents: when your child asks for a smartphone, consider getting them a computer or a laptop instead. Using a computer can help teens build valuable skills. The future will present even more challenges, and a significant reason behind the current unemployment among Bangladesh’s youth is a lack of tech skills and poor English proficiency. As new technologies continue to flood developed countries, being skilled will be essential to keep pace. Without that, many in the future may find themselves out of work. Developing technological skills is also crucial for higher education.

Instead of letting smartphones lead your child down a destructive path, give them tools that will help them learn and thrive, like a computer or a laptop.
